Have you ever heard of Epsom Salt? A carton or bag of this pure mineral compound just might change your self-care routine forever. There are an incredible amount of reasons to make Epsom salt a regular item on your grocery list including beauty, household, and gardening uses.

But today we’ll be talking about how you can use it to bring healing into your life.

Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits. Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches. [Source]

Aside from the physical benefits an Espom salt soak has on our bodies, this cleansing ritual can also help to detoxify our mind and spirit. It can help us sleep better and de-stress. It softens the muscle tissue to help with stretching and create space in our experience for more of the things we desire. (The perfect addition for your massage, yoga or exercise routine!)

Epsom Salt Bath

If you have a good tub to soak in, or want to treat yourself to a weekend at a hotel with a fancy bathtub (recommend) this option is for you.

Directions

  1. Draw a bath with hot water. Note: After your bath is drawn the water will need to sit for about 10 minutes before you get in. Be sure to make the water hot enough so that it is not cold by the time you’re ready for your soak.
  2. Add about 2-3 cups of Epsom salt into your bath water.
  3. Optional: Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil. (Check out our essential oil guy here!) Ultimately, you can use any kind of oil you like for your bath, but lavender is what we prefer.
  4. While you’re waiting for your Epsom salt to dissolve and your water to cool, drink 1 complete glass of water.
  5. When your 10 minutes is up, check the water to make sure it’s not too hot and give it a stir to help dissolve any remaining pieces of Epsom salt.
  6. Now that your bath is ready, light a few candles placed in safe spots around your the bathroom and enjoy your truly healing soak.

This is a wonderful ritual to have as often as possible, but if it’s not something you can easily make time for, aim to partake in an Epsom salt bath every Full Moon.

Epsom Salt Shower

If you don’t have a good tub to soak in, or have the time to treat yourself to a weekend at a hotel with a fancy bathtub (although we highly recommend making the time) this option is for you.

Directions

  1. Place your stopper in the drain. Or whatever you have to do to keep the water from running out. Fill the tub up 1/3 of the way with hot water. Note: You will be letting the water sit for 10 minutes, make sure to have it hot enough so that it won’t be cold by the time you step in.
  2. Add 2-3 cups of Epsom salt into the water.
  3. Add 10 drops of Eucalyptus and 5 drops of Orange essential oil to the water. Ultimately, you can use any kind of oil you like for your shower, but Eucalyptus and Orange is what we prefer!
  4. While you’re waiting for your Epsom salt to dissolve and your water to cool, drink 1 complete glass of water.
  5. When your 10 minutes is up, check the water to make sure it’s not too hot and give it a stir to help dissolve any remaining pieces of Epsom salt.
  6. Now that your shower is ready, light a prayer candle and let the cleansing begin!

You may even set an intention for your shower. My intention for this shower is to heal. My intention is to forgive. My intention is to surrender. Etc.

Epsom Salt Foot Soak

Had a hard day? Been on your feet nonstop? Feeling bloated? Achy? Just plain bitchy? This foot soak is one of my favorite things to do when I am in need of a perky-lift-me-up-relax-me-down kind of treatment. If you don’t have a machine that is made for your feet to be soaked in, find your largest bowl or one of those storage containers. Anything that has some depth and your feet can fit into will work. You want your feet to be able to be completely submerged, right above the ankle.

Directions

  1. Fill up the container you are using for your soak with hot water. Note: You will be letting the water sit for 10 minutes, make sure to have it hot enough so that it won’t be cold by the time you step in.
  2. Add 2-3 cups of Epsom salt into the water.
  3. Add 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil to the water. Ultimately, you can use any kind of oil you like for your shower, but Peppermint is what we like best for the foot soak!
  4. While you’re waiting for your Epsom salt to dissolve and your water to cool, drink 1 complete glass of water.
  5. When your 10 minutes is up, check the water to make sure it’s not too hot and give it a stir to help dissolve any remaining pieces of Epsom salt.
  6. Now find a comfortable place to sit, place a towel on the floor under your bowl to absorb any spills and sink your feet into the water! You’ll want to sit and relax for at least 20 minutes for the soak to be most beneficial.

To make a ritual out of this, plan on providing yourself with an Epsom salt foot soak during your moon cycle. Think of it as a way to enhance the healing that already takes place within you during this sensitive period (no pun intended) of time.

Important reminder: Drink plenty of water after participating in this ritual. If you begin to experience extreme dry mouth or dizziness you need to increase your water intake immediately.
